I really am a frustrated gardener. I have houseplants and I know they're good for indoor air quality and all that, but . . . whatever. Every year when the weather begins to turn warm I wish for a real garden of my own, outside, with dirt and worms and butterflies and bees.
A few weeks ago we had the outdoor common areas cleaned up--the bushes were a few years overdue for trimming, and there were dead and dying bushes that needed to be removed. After the dead things were hauled away, we found ourselves with an empty bed about 32 feet long and 4 feet wide.
Because I come from generations of avid gardeners, it took me about four seconds to begin dreaming of all the beautiful things that could grow in that space. I got really happy, thinking maybe I might get to do a little gardening despite living in a condo.
I admit it, I just really wanted to get my hands on that sunny plot and make it into something beautiful. Another board member had her own designs on that space, though. She has a lot of time on her hands and a husband who likes to take things over, and neither of them listens to anything anyone says, so making it a joint project did not appeal to me. So at the board meeting, it became her project. We discussed and agreed on a plan to put low-maintenance perennials there. Instead, her husband bought sod, and it's now a strip of grass instead of a garden.
Hmph. Well, it's okay. I know it would be a mistake to invest any more of my heart and soul into this place, and a garden would only distract me from all the things that are no fun but still have to get done. like estimates for the roof repairs. I have to remember always that my only goal is to help get the property back on track so I can get out of here at the earliest opportunity with as little financial damage as possible. I'm not here to have fun. This is strictly business.
